Betting on Oakland Residential Development

(SF GATE)

I wrote this opinion piece in 2014 before Oakland caught on as the right place to build housing in the East Bay. At the time this was due to its many advantages, including comparatively low prices, robust transit and good weather.

I urged the city to implement several measures to expedite and lower the cost of housing development, several of which were implemented, leading to Oakland’s largest building boom in history. Cities are at the whim of development cycles, and Oakland is no exception. But I believe the City will continue to be a smart choice for housing development at all income levels in the long run.
